Help end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth

Recently, we received a touching email from a spokesperson for Heifer.org. So touching that I thought we'd share it with readers of The Pet Blog.

"A recent study showed that 63 percent of Americans have a pet. Our pets are our friends, guides, therapy aids and a part of the family. Having an animal in your life can enrich your day and bring tremendous happiness. However, for millions of families across the globe, a pet is more than just a trusted companion - an animal in their life can be their lifeline to food, sustenance, owning a business and providing for their family. But many of these families cannot afford the animals that can make the biggest impact, and that is where your readers may be able to help.

Heifer is an organization that allows consumers around the globe to make a donation, via Heifer.org, that can help a family in need of food, income and opportunity. The family, which may be on the other side of the globe or right here in the U.S., receives a cow, goat, sheep or other animal, along with training in its care and training in environmentally friendly agriculture. It's a gift that makes a difference-one that can actually save a life or provide a hopeful future. For most of us in America, a cow is an animal we see in a field and that provides milk. But for many in the world who live on less than $2 a day, a cow is a living savings account, a source of milk protein and income.

Heifer's mission is to end hunger and poverty while caring for the Earth. Since 1944, Heifer International has provided livestock and environmentally sound agricultural training to improve the lives of those who struggle daily for reliable sources of food and income. Heifer is currently working in 50 countries, including the United States, to help families and communities become more self-reliant.

If you need more information on Heifer please visit their website. For as little as a few dollars, your readers can show their love for animals and make a tremendous impact on a family in need. Thanks in advance."
